A wonderful B&B in beautiful Brixham!

Brixham offers stunning coastal walks and a fabulous harbour.

The Golden Hind is at the forefront of the harbour surrounded by an excellent selection of restaurants, shops and pubs. A  walk from the inner harbour to the Marina takes you to the Breakwater and Breakwater beach, from where a short stroll takes you to Shoalstone Pool, which is a fabulous outdoor seawater pool open throughout the summer months. A further short walk past Berry Head Hotel and along the south west coast path through woodland leads to the beautiful headland of Berry Head. It offers amazing views, a wonderful award-winning cafe and interesting fortifications from the Napoleonic era.

Heading away from Berry Head, St Mary’s Bay beach offers a more sandy stretch and is tucked away near Sharkham Point. It can be reached along the south west coast path or by car (along a narrow lane to a small car parking area). There are steep steps to the beach.

The other direction from Brixham harbour leads past the fish market and out to Freshwater Quarry, where boats are moored and you can look across to the Breakwater. From there walk through Battery Park which offers panoramic views of the bay and is also a Scheduled Monument. This area has been used for military training since the 1780s and was a World War II Coastal Defence Battery, with up to 250 soldiers based there. At the back of Battery Gardens and Fishcombe Cove is The Battery Heritage Education Centre & Museum.

Yards from Battery Park is Fishcombe Cove, with just a short walk further taking you to Churston Cove. Both are pebble coves.

Transport

The number 12 bus stops close to The Melville and goes to Paignton, Torquay and Newton Abbott. Visitors wanting to go to Kingswear and take the passenger ferry to Dartmouth can travel on the number 18 bus from the town centre, just a five-minute walk away.

There is a ferry from Brixham harbour across to Torquay and various boat trips to interesting places such as Dartmouth or Paignton. For visitors wanting a different mode of transport, the steam train from Paignton hugs the coastline until it moves inland and terminates at Kingswear. The steam engine can be combined with a ferry trip from Dartmouth.

There are also boat trips to Teignmouth, mackerel fishing or sea-faris. Information on these can be found at the harbourside kiosks.
